Idea: Cup and String Phone

Category: Ideas

While on my usual rounds of RSS feeds, I stumbled on this particular piece of vandalism in Ann Arbor, MI:

I thought that was a pretty funny idea that could definitely be used. The mod will be along the lines of the Banana Phone, featuring a cup instead of a banana. It’s a really simple idea that can be really funny to execute.

This mod is nothing more than attaching a bluetooth headset to a party cup, but discretely.

I currently own a Nokia BH-211 bluetooth headset that I picked up for about $40. Unfortunately, (though sometimes fortunately) you get what you pay for. It features a sub-par earpiece that is both a chore to listen to, and a chore to wear; and it has the most omni-directional microphone I’ve used. When the speaker quality gets low, you have to turn up the volume to hear it better, but then this increase in volume allows the microphone to catch the conversation. What results is a horrible echo for the person on the other end of the line.

So here’s the game plan. We are going to open up this sweet pea bluetooth headset, and see what it’s made of. The headset and speaker are going to rest at the base of the cup. If the speaker is not directly attached to the board, I’m going to mount it right onto the base of the cup. Hopefully, this will add some volume as it makes the cup vibrate, and surely the closed environment will help. I will extend the wires for the microphone element, and move it to the outside of the cup. Then, for the finale, a piece of string will be knotted and attached to the end of the cup as well. The string will be tied to my phone. It will give the illusion that the cup is really talking to the phone through the string.

Confusion and Hilarity ensues.
